Every summer I have the same obsession: Find the safest, most effective sunscreens for me and my family. And the first stop for my search is the Environmental Working Group's "Skin Deep" sunscreen guide. EWG evaluates sunscreens for both its effectiveness at blocking UVA and UVB rays and for the safety of its ingredients. They give each product a total score, 1 being the safest and most effective, and higher scores for sunscreens that don't deliver or that are high in toxins.
They update it every couples of years, so it's worth checking. I always see a lot of great options ... but so many of the recommended brands are either super expensive, hard to find, or both. So I've combed through the database looking for the highest recommendations that are also affordable and easily available. Here are my picks for the best sunscreens you can actually buy for 2014.
