Juan Pablo Finally Talks Marriage -- With the Wrong Woman!

Post by Adriana Velez.

juan pabloWhile the world waits with baited breath for a proposal for The Bachelor's Nikki Ferrell it looks like her bachelor has pulled a fast run-around on us. Juan Pablo just asked another woman to marry him! I think? At least, that's what it looks like. JP was doing a media appearance with the St. Johns women's softball team today, posing with the whole team. "I just BECAME a @StJohnsSoftball team FAN... Very NICE group of GIRLS... Good luck Friday against Georgetown..." bla bla bla. Insert squeals. But then oh, the next photo. Well, you should just see it for yourself.

Wait, is this real..? @JuanPaGalavis marry me?! pic.twitter.com/ZhFTyYAbIK
Who is this Aleshia Link, and should Nikki be worried?!? I'm joking -- obviously, given the monkey emoticons he later added, he's totally kidding. Jajajaja, Juan Pablo. He's obviously playing on our obsession with his marital status. But what does Nikki think of all this?

If Nikki's following it, she has no comment on Twitter, anyway. Last we heard, she spent the night eating Kettle Corn and then rode the subway for the first time today. Oh here they are:

Still, if I were waiting around for a proposal, and if I knew everyone else in America was waiting for that proposal, Juan Pablo's joke would totally annoy me. I mean, geez, at least if he were genuinely funny you could overlook it. But really, the joke's on us. This is why we need to back off these two and let their relationship play out however it's going to -- because how can love thrive in a fishbowl?

Would it bug you if your boyfriend made jokes about proposals while you're waiting for a proposal?

Michelle Duggar’s Monthly Grocery Bill Will Shock You

Post by Adriana Velez.

michelle duggarHow do you feed a big family without going broke? I know just the mom who could answer that question: 19 Kids and Counting'sMichelle Duggar is spilling her grocery shopping tips. But first, aren't you dying to find out how much it costs to feed all those kids, not to mention all those teenagers? A couple could go broke, quickly! Good thing the Duggars are so smart with money. Their monthly grocery bill may take your breath away, but just imagine how much bigger it would be if Michelle weren't such a budget wizard.

Even with all their cost-saving strategies, Michelle says the family spends nearly $3,000 a month on food. "Our goal for our monthly food budget is $3,000. It used to be more like $2,000, but we've noticed the costs of groceries have gone up. Also, our boys have grown a lot and they have hollow legs." For a family of 21, that means about $35 per person, per week. That's incredible. And when you hear how she shops, Michelle sounds like living proof that life is cheaper by the dozen.

1. Shop at discount stores, warehouse clubs, and co-ops. "You can save thousands of dollars doing just that," Michelle says. We all know about Coscto and stores like that, but it's interesting that she mentions co-ops. I've belonged to a food co-op for years, and the price difference is huge, as is the quality. Co-ops vary widely around the country, though.

2. Buy in bulk. This is where having lots of storage space comes in handy. But even if you don't have yards of pantry space for giant bags of rice, you can save on the smaller bulk items. Spices, nuts, and dried fruit are so much cheaper when you buy them from the bulk bins.

3. Stock up every month on staples. For Michelle, that's foods like butter, cereal, and oats. For you it could be something else. Stocking up on staples makes grocery shopping simpler. Do it well, and you can basically shop your own pantry throughout the month.

4. Buy fruits and vegetables every three to four days. Michelle mentions this almost off-handedly, but it's worth pointing out. When you buy fresh produce once a week, it's hard to keep it all fresh. Speaking from experience, there's always something wilting by the end of the week. And it's hard for me to plan out my week's meals by which vegetables are going to go bad first. Doing two quick produce trips can help save you from wasting food, which saves money in the long run.

How does your family save money on groceries?

New Movie Reveals the Truth About the Addictive Drug You Take Every Day (VIDEO)

fed upWe all know what you're supposed to do if you want to lose weight and live healthy: Eat less and exercise. Calorie in, calorie out. It's that simple. Except -- it's not that simple, or we wouldn't be floundering in a tidal wave of type-2 diabetes and other lifestyle-related diseases. Two generations ago losing weight was all about saturated fat and will power

Now there's a new culprit on the menu. It could be responsible for the so-called obesity epidemic. And you may be powerless against it. Meet the most addictive drug on the market, the toxin you should be most worried about: Sugar. That's according to a new documentary out Friday, Fed Up.

The movie follows children who are facing dire health consequences related to their weight. And the tragic thing is, they're actually working with doctors to diet their way back to good health. One of them is physically active every single day, and to hear her weep over how hard it is to resist chocolate nearly made me weep. Meanwhile, the parents seem a little hapless. They know they should be making better choices for their kids. Why can't they?

More from The Stir: Here's How Much Sugar We SHOULD Be Eating

Maybe it's not a matter of willpower. The filmmakers make the case that sugar is an addictive substance. It literally operates on your system the same way cocaine does, building cravings and dependence. And since it's in most of our food, it's nearly unavoidable. Basically your best weapon is knowledge, which is why I think Fed Up is worth watching. Even if you don't believe or agree with everything, you'll learn a lot about what's in your food and how you can (hopefully) outsmart the American diet.

Can you win? Maybe. Here's a few things the film says we can do to fight back and reclaim our health.

Try getting off sugar for 10 days. Avoid buying processed foods. Steer clear of ingredients you don't recognize. Beware of added sugar hiding in foods like juice, bread, cereal, granola bars, yogurt, ketchup, chips, salad dressing, and peanut butter. Avoid kids' menus. Tell your child's principal to put students' health ahead of soda companies' money -- and get rid of those vending machines. Pressure your government to stop enabling our dependence on sugar through subsidies.

I'm just grateful I have a sensitivity to sugar that keeps me from eating very much of it. And I live in a community that doesn't constantly bombard me with sugary temptation. And I actually enjoy cooking from scratch. Otherwise, I think I'd be struggling right along with everyone else.

Do you feel like you eat too much sugar? Are you worried about this at all?

15 minute dinners I do this all the time because I don't have much choice: Make dinner in 15 minutes or less. You too? Gone are the days when I used to lovingly labor for 2 hours on a Turkish fish stew with pomegranates. Now I need to get something in front of my son pretty much the moment I walk into the door.

Here are 5 of my favorite go-to dinner recipes, things I can whip up in a jiffy but that are still definitely homemade.

Here are 7 lunches packed in mason jars that will charm you into bringing a healthy meal to work with you every day of the week.

The key to making this work is to put heavy, wet ingredients at the bottom, and keep the greens up at the top. Otherwise, you're limited only by your imagination and the contents of your refrigerator!

‘Face Tapping’ Is the 1 Weird Weight Loss Trick That Just Might Work

$

Post by Adriana Velez.

weight lossIf you're struggling to stop overeating and lose weight, here's one outside-the-box trick you could try -- and no, I'm not pushing an Internet hoax on you. A new book claims you can use "tapping" for weight loss. The Tapping Solution for Weight Loss and Body Confidence by Jessica Ortner harnesses the power of what's called Emotional Freedom Technique, or EFT, to get out of the habit of eating when you're stressed out. All you have to do! Is tap yourself in various places around your face and body while you repeat a mantra like, "Even though I feel anxious about wearing a swimsuit I love and accept myself."

Yeah. And if you believe that, I have some "vitamins" I could sell you that will give you superpowers. EFT sets off my BS detector like crazy, but I think it could actually work. Here's why.

Okay, so the idea is that one of the reasons we binge eat is because the feelings we're feeling are so overwhelming we have to throw food at them to get them to shut up. (I'm paraphrasing the science of stress eating here.) So the next time we find ourselves digging into that bag of candy we stop and pay attention to our feelings. Then we methodically tap our faces and mutter to ourselves.

Is it the tapping? Hell no. EFT has been discredited by the legit science community. It's the stopping and the noticing. The important thing is that you become more aware of the feelings that cause you to overeat, and you do something instead of eating.

What science says does work is mindfulness and finding ways to make snacking just a little less convenient. So whether it's tapping yourself or having to unwrap a chocolate rather than grabbing a handful of M&Ms, if you have to slow down you'll eat less. Or maybe not at all.

So EFT is just a placebo, but sometimes placebos work, even when we're aware of them. Anything that gets you to slow down and pay attention to your feelings could help you snack less. And that's why this one weird trick could actually work.

Do you think this technique would work on you?

The 1 Thing You Should Do to Save Your Sexless Marriage (VIDEO)

Post by Adriana Velez.

couple in bedHow important is sex for a healthy marriage? Supposedly one in three couples is struggling with a "sexual desire gap" -- meaning one of you wants it a whole lot more than the other does. It's not surprising. All the demands on our lives, the stress, the lack of sleep, can be libido-crushing. And sex is hard to talk about for many couples. But letting your sexless marriage chug along untended could seriously hurt your relationship -- and in ways you may not even be aware of.

There's a lot of great advice for couples struggling to get some sexual healing back into their marriage. But relationship expert Michele Weiner-Davis has a novel suggestion for those of you in a sex-starved marriage. Here's how to save your marriage if you're never or rarely in the mood for gettin' it on.

But first, here's why a healthy, thriving sex life is important to your marriage: "It's really about feeling loved, about feeling wanted, about feeling connected," Weiner-Davis says. When your sex life dies, "intimacy on all levels goes right out the door." We need that intense connection, maybe even more than we need food and water. Worse, disconnection and rejection hurt.

So what can you do if you're just not in the mood? Change the way we think about how sexual desire works. We usually think of sex happening something like this:

1. Feelings of desire lead to ....

2. Initiating sex and feeling aroused, which leads to ...

3. Feeling an orgasms, we hope! Which then leads to ...

4. Resolution, that happy afterglow following sex.

What Wiener-Davis suggests is that sex doesn't always happen in this order for everyone. For a lot of people (she says maybe half), steps 1 and 2 are reversed. (And I would say these steps are reversed for all of us from time to time.) Maybe you need to be physically stimulated before you can feel sexual desire. Arousal comes before desire.

So if your partner is in the mood, but you're not, give in to their advances anyway and see if their caresses can get you there. Weiner-Davis says, "Once you get into it you just might remember: 'I like sex.'"

She has advice for spouses on the other end, too -- if you're frustrated that your partner never wants to have sex, you need to manage your feelings of hurt and anger and try to be more understanding. And for both spouses, there are three important lessons Weiner-Davis says we need to remember.

1. We have to become experts in our partners' way of feeling connected to us.

2. Don't tell yourself, "it's just sex." "Sex is a powerful way of connecting and bonding with somebody you love."

3. "When you get your partner's way of connecting with you, you don't have to fully understand it, you don't have to fully agree with it, you just have to do it ... healthy relationships are based on mutual care-taking, plus it's about love."

She's not talking about lying back and just letting someone do their thing while you stare at the ceiling and think about your to-do list. And she's not talking about accepting marital rape. She's talking about treating sex as an act of love, a way to care for your spouse, and a way to feel closer. And I think approaching it with that attitude could make a big difference.

2nd Case of MERS Strikes the U.S.: What You Need to Know (VIDEO)

Post by Adriana Velez.

hospitalA scary new virus is roaming the globe. It's called Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, or MERS. The first confirmed case in the U.S. was reported May 2 in Indiana, but it didn't stop there. Today, a second U.S. case of MERS was confirmed in Orlando, Florida. That's got a lot of us worried. How contagious is this illness? How dangerous is it? And what exactly is MERS, anyway? Here's 8 things you need to know about the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome outbreak.

1. According to the Centers for Disease Control, MERS is a viral respiratory illness first discovered in Saudi Arabia in 2012. The symptoms include fever, shortness of breath, and cough.

2. MERS can lead to severe respiratory illness in most patients, and of those cases about 30 percent have died.

3. Officials say the second case of MERS is not related to the first. The patient had recently traveled from Saudi Arabia. In other words, it does not appear to be spreading in the U.S. at this time despite this second case.

4. There is no vaccine for MERS.

5. MERS is spread through close contact with infected people. "This virus has not shown the ability to spread easily from person to person in community settings," says Dr. Anne Schuchat, assistant surgeon general with the U.S. Public Health Service and director of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases.

6. The MERS patient in Indiana has been released from the hospital and is recovering "in isolation" at home. The Florida MERS patient is "doing well" in a Florida hospital, also isolated. This person was a health care provider (as was the Indiana patient) who lives and works in Saudi Arabia.

7. The CDC is investigating both cases, tracing back to everyone the patients may have had contact with to make sure no one else was infected.

8. Should we be worried? The CDC says no; MERS does not pose a threat to the general public. But they are still "concerned."

My 7-Day Core Workout Challenge Had an Unexpected Effect on Me (VIDEOS)

Post by Adriana Velez.

pilates 100sHow's your core? You know, your abs and back muscles, all that good stuff that holds you upright day after day. Lately I've been experiencing what I call Core Collapse Disorder. That's when you feel your core muscles loosening on you because you're not working on them anymore. When I'm doing ab work regularly it's like I have a natural corset that keeps everything pulled together. When I'm not, it feels like everything is just sort of hanging loose. And that's bad not just for the upcoming swimsuit season -- for me it also leads to lower back pain.

I decided it was time for a week-long core challenge: A core mini-workout every single day for 7 days! Here's how it went.

DISCLAIMER: These are workouts for a reasonably fit, healthy person. Always talk with your doctor before starting a new exercise.

I asked The Stircontributor Carly Pizzanifor core exercise suggestions. She recommended "dead bugs" and Spider-Mans (more on those later), side planks, reverse crunches, Pilates 100s, and -- lunges? "Surprisingly, lunges are awesome for your abs. They're working hard to maintain your posture while you lunge."

So I figured 5 mintues of core work a day should be do-able. No problem! A mere blip in my day ... except it's not. Here's what I did.

Tuesday: One set of 30 Dead Bugs, two sets of Pilates 100s, a plank pose for one minute, and two one-minute side planks. I am super enthused! Core fitness, here we come. The Dead Bugs are fun, but I kind of feel like I'd need to do more than 30 to really feel the impact.

Here's the Dead Bug

Pilates 100s

See this video on The Stir by CafeMom.

And here's how to do a basic plank.

See this video on The Stir by CafeMom.

Here's how to do a side plank.

See this video on The Stir by CafeMom.

Wednesday: Two sets of Pilates 100s, a basic plank pose for one minute, and two one-minute side planks. Yes, I skipped the Dead Bugs. Flaking already?!? I decided if I was going to keep this up every day I'd need to trim my routine just a little bit.

Thursday: Three sets of 20 squats, a one-minute plank. I liked the squats, and I could see what Carly meant about how they work the core. The next morning, though, I felt it mostly in the glutes.

Here's how to do a squat.

See this video on The Stir by CafeMom.

Friday: On Friday evenings my gym has a spin class followed by 15 minutes of core work -- and it's tough. The instructor may or may not be trying to kill us, it's hard to tell. But she does make a point of telling us that core work isn't just about your belly. You need to build up the muscles in your back as well. And she even has us working on our glutes. My two favorites from her routine this week were the reverse crunches (which Carly also recommends), the glute bridge, and side plank leg lifts.

There's a couple different versions of the reverse crunch. Here's how we do them.

See this video on The Stir by CafeMom.

And here's how to do the glute bridge. I never would have seen this as a core exercise, but I actually could feel my back muscles working. We held 7 to 10-pound weights while doing these.

See this video on The Stir by CafeMom.

And here's how to do a side plank leg lift. That second side is always killer for me.

See this video on The Stir by CafeMom.

Saturday: Eh, a plank. I was tired from Friday.

Sunday: Um, yet another low-ambition day in which I did a single plank. Hey, it was Mother's Day! I try not to wallow in self-loathing and FAIL for flaking two days in a row.

Monday: One-minute plank, 25 plank leg lifts on each side, 40 table tops, and three sets of 10 reverse crunches. Yes, I was making up for my slothful weekend.

One exercise I didn't get around to is the Spider-Man exercise Carly mentioned, which she says you can do in place. Maybe I'll try that later today.

See this video on The Stir by CafeMom.

And there you go -- a week of core work. The hardest part about this challenge was simply doing it consistently, day after day. A minute's worth of plank is one thing, but even though 5 minutes a day sounds like nothing it was kind of too much for my schedule. Time to face reality: If I want to do daily core work, I need to do just a couple of the hardest exercises instead of a full 5 minutes. Oh hello, painful reverse crunches! I guess I'll be doing you all summer.

At least I feel like I have my abs back again, though. My spin workout felt less shambly (spinning works your core, but having a strong core in the first place gives you a better workout). And I found myself sitting up straight more at work. Totally worth it. This was exactly what I needed to jump-start my spring.

Do you do core work? What are your favorite exercises?

Cat Missing in Tsunami Reunited With Family After 3 Years

Post by Adriana Velez.

black catI see lost and found cat flyers around my neighborhood all the time. You, too? It's the saddest thing -- so many domesticated cats left to fend for themselves, so many owners missing their pets. And often, it's a cat who lost through no fault of the owners. What happens when a natural disaster tears an animal and its family apart? In 2011 the Yamagishi family lost their beloved cat during the Great East Japan earthquake and tsunami. But this story has a happy ending: After three years the cat was reunited with its family! Here's how it happened.

When the earthquake and tsunami of 2011 hit the Yamagishi family's home in Ofunato their black short-haired cat, Suika, went missing. They searched for three months to no avail and finally came to the sad conclusion that Suika had died in the disaster.

But this spring a couple discovered a black short-haired cat sleeping in a forest outside a nearby city. They noticed the cat was friendly and wearing a collar, so they took it to the Ofunato Health Center. There an employee photographed the cat to put its picture in the paper -- and the employee noticed faded letters and numbers on the collar.

A quick phone call later and the Yamagishis were reunited with their beloved pet. "Where have you been?" Kazuko Yamagishi cried upon seeing her cat. "It's just like a dream!"

It's a good thing the Yamagishis put their name and phone number on Suika's collar. And it's a good thing the health center employee noticed it when he was taking a photo. And it's an especially good thing nothing happened to Suika during her three-year sojourn alone.

You sometimes hear about lost pets who find their way home, and I know animals have certain instincts that can help them if they're lost. But that's under more ordinary circumstances. If they've been in a natural disaster I think it would be harder. And a tsunami? Everything would smell differently, and the landscape would shift. So of course Suika wouldn't be able to return home without help. And even though three long years had passed it sounds like everyone was happy to see each other again.

If you lost your pet in an earthquake do you think they'd be able to find their way back to you?

How to Freeze Your Wedding Cake in 4 Simple Steps

$

Post by Adriana Velez.

how to freeze your wedding cakeOne of my favorite wedding traditions is saving a piece of the wedding cake to eat on your first anniversary. Usually it's the very top tier, which just happens to be the perfect size for a couple to share. What a sweet way to celebrate a year of marriage -- and to remember the happy occasion you shared together!

Even though in this case the sentiment means more than the actual taste, you still want to preserve as much of the flavor and the decoration as possible. Freezer burn is not delicious. So here's the best way to freeze that top tier of your wedding cake.

1. Pre-freeze. If you want to preserve all that delicate frosting decoration, you'll need to harden it a little, first. This sounds counter-intuitive, but as soon as possible (same day, for best results), put your tier in the freezer uncovered. Leave it there for a couple hours or overnight.

2. Wrap in plastic. Now that the frosting is frozen in place you can wrap the cake in about 5 or 6 layers of cling wrap. You'll want to cover as much of every surface as possible, but not handle the cake so much that the frosting starts to melt.

3. Wrap in foil. Next you can wrap your cake in a protective layer of heavy aluminum foil. It's ready for the deep freeze. Make sure it's in a location that won't get bumped a lot.

4. Thaw before eating. About 36 hours before your first anniversary (congratulations!) take the cake out of the freezer and unwrap it completely, first. Then let the cake thaw on a plate in the refrigerator. About an hour before you want to eat it, move the cake to a counter and let it reach room temperature. Enjoy!

Do you think your wedding cake will taste the same a year later?

How to Clean Your Bathroom in Under 15 Minutes

Post by Adriana Velez.

clean bathroomCall me a weirdo, but I actually enjoy cleaning my bathroom. It's my sanctuary and I love the daydream-inducing sky blue penny tiles I picked out for the floor. It's just that I have a LIFE, see, and that kind of gets in the way of doing a deep cleaning of my bathroom. Most of the time we get by on a quick swipe -- and by quick I mean 10 to 15 minutes. I'm starting to get pretty good at this drive-by cleaning. Here's how the quickie bathroom cleaning goes down.

Each of these tasks gets no more than 3 minutes, tops.

1. Clean the toilet. If I have time for only one task, this is almost always it. I have to have a clean-ish toilet. I live with a little boy. So, I'll do a quick, vigorous scrub in the bowl and a fast wipe-down with cleanser everywhere else.

2. Pick up strays. I don't have counters, so stuff doesn't collect there. And no one is allowed to just drop a towel on the floor. But for a quick clean, I'll pick up any stray objects left out on the sink or the floor. And I'll get rid of hair in drains, though that's something I do daily after my shower anyway.

3. Clean scum in corners. You know that ring of scum you get around the tub? I'll take on the whole thing if I have time. But if not, I'll just get the corners, where it's worst. And I'll also scrub the corners of my bathroom floor, where air currents push the most dust and gunk.

4. Swipe the sink. I'll get the handles and faucet first. Then I'll clean any globs of toothpaste. (Ugh, WHY does anyone think it's okay to leave that?!?)

5. Sparkle-fy the mirror. Last of all, I'll clean the mirror. It takes ten seconds and makes everything look so much better.

And then I scamper off like a bunny rabbit muttering to myself, "good enough, good enough, good enough." Onto the next item on my mile-long list.

How long do you spend cleaning the bathroom?

Angry Woman Calls 911 After Restaurant Chain Botches Her Pizza Order

flatizzaAre we all familiar with the term "hangry"? It's when you're so hungry, you're angry. HANGRY. We all get hangry sometimes, and that's why someone created this t-shirt reading "I'm sorry for what I said when I was hungry." But hangry is not why 911 was created. And yet, hangry people keep calling the emergency hotline when their food disappoints them. Just the other day Bevalente Michette Hall called 911 over her Subway "Flatizza" flatbread pizza.

Okay, so the most important thing, first: What Went Wrong. Apparently Hall's pizza was supposed to have pizza sauce, but it got marinara sauce instead. I get that. Pizza should have pizza sauce, though it can be made with marinara, too. I might complain about that, too.

"They put marinara sauce on it and it's terrible!" Hall later told the 911 dispatcher. From what we can gather, it sounds like her request for either a refund or a re-do turned into a heated altercation, which is what led to the emergency call. "Now they're telling me they can't give me my money back and they can't make me another pizza!" Oh my God, the injustice! Though I have to say, when one orders an item called "flatizza" one should lower one's expectations.

More from The Stir: Man's 911 Call to Report Wrong Sandwich Order Has to Be Heard to Be Believed

To be fair, this would make me feel angry and frustrated, too. But not 911 angry and frustrated. For crying out loud, why do people keep calling this life-or-death line over food matters? I mean, I'm not going to say "it's just one meal" because I hate it when people tell me that. Obviously it's much more than a meal for we food obsessives. But still! Call Subway's corporate headquarters, flame them on Facebook or Twitter, but don't make it 911's nightmare.

Maybe we need a 911 for food problems? Like when you're served a green chili burrito that's clearly just a soggy flour tortilla filled with condensed cream of chicken soup with canned jalapeños. (I'm looking at you, horrible Mexican restaurant in Cedar City, Utah.) Or when you go to order your favorite blood orange hibiscus glazed donut at the shop all the way across town and they've run out! WHY???

What were we talking about? Oh yes, 911 for food problems. We need one of those. Like, soon. It's kind of an emergency.

Do you ever get this worked up over disappointing food?

Every couple planning a wedding knows how important the venue is. You want it to accommodate your friends and family, to be accessible, to be affordable -- and hopefully it's beautiful as well. Couples put a lot of thought and money into their dream locations. So what happens when -- poof! -- that location suddenly disappears on you? What do you do when, at the last minute, you have no place for your celebration -- and you can't change the date? I guess there are worse things that could happen, but what a stressful situation for an engaged couple. Here are 6 tales of wedding venue disaster.
