Amy Winehouse's father, Mitch Winehouse, sent out the final word today: NO BIOPIC! Rumor has it that Amy's ex-boyfriend Reg Traviss has been approached to produce a film based on Amy's life -- but it doesn't look very likely, now.
But wait, that's not exactly what Mitch said. He told the Daily Mail, "It would hardly be a biopic without the music and we’d never allow the songs to be released." It looks like Mitch isn't saying no biopic ever -- but he clearly wants control over how his daughter's life story is told, and I don't blame him a bit.
Just last month Mitch was joking about the idea of Lady Gaga playing his daughter: "I don’t know what her English accent is like but it’s not just an English accent she would have to perfect -- it’s an English-Cockney-Jewish accent so she better start practicing now." He added, “But she would be great.” So apparently "never" means something more like "maybe, if the right people come together."
Mitch is already planning to write a biography of his late daughter. And even though he can't control the legacy of tabloid stories that recorded Amy's too-short life, it looks like he'll be the one to decide how Amy's story is told from here on out. And what parent wouldn't want that for their dead child? Maybe that's why he's not quite ready to hand off his daughter's music to just anyone who wants to make a film about Amy -- especially not a former lover who was unable to prevent her death.
It also looks like Mitch is looking out for the Amy Winehouse Foundation, too. ALL the money he makes on the singer's biography will benefit the foundation. And since he owns all the copyrights to Amy's music, I predict Mitch would probably make sure any future use of his daughter's music in a film would also feed the foundation. It can't bring back his daughter, but he's fiercely guarding her memory.
