Well it's about time! I've been sitting here with my tea, ringing my servant bell and wondering when in the world the English would come to their senses and give Dame Maggie Smith something for her role as the Dowager Countess in Downton Abbey. And at last, BAFTA has deigned to nominate Smith for best supporting actress.
Just because America already thought to award Dame Maggie Smith an Emmy for the role last year certainly won't make the UK second-best. Much. But it still needs to be done, English people. Do you duty and all that.
And what's with never awarding Maggie Smith with a television BAFTA ever? She's been nominated four times already! Scandalous. How she puts up with you is simply beyond my imagination. You know she's not going to be around forever, don't you?
Oh all right. Fine. She does have five BAFTAs for her film work.
But still, you've seen this show, have you not, England? I believe you get to see it before we do. Yes, yes, it's a Hollywood-by-way-of-Public-Television version of England. But surely you must realize how delicious this Dowager Countess is?
So delicious, in fact, that apparently the producers are willing to put up with what a colossal pain in the ass Maggie Smith is just to keep her on the set. Executive Producer Rebecca Eaton says, "Maggie is a handful, it's true. She's very difficult. She knows her worth, and she's tricky on the set, but she delivers when the time comes." Harrumph. I bet they never said that about Lawrence Olivier.
My point is, we'd better see Maggie Smith win this time around or I shall be passive-aggressively pissed. I shall make disapproving muttering sounds and sigh with irritation. I shall even shake my head!
