If you had an extra million dollars or so, would you give it to a presidential candidate? Comedian Bill Maher would. At a performance "CrazyStupidPolitics" broadcast by Yahoo last night, he made a surprise announcement that he's donating $1 million to the Obama-supporting SuperPAC, Priority USA Action.
Worth the money? Maher says it's "the wisest investment I think I could make." And he says that an Obama victory over any of the Republican candidates would be "worth a million dollars." From your wallet to God's ears, Maher. He's also encouraging his fellow fat-cats to make their own mega-donations.
That's great for Team Obama, but Priority USA is still just dealing with chump change compared with the Romney super PAC.
Romney's campaign definitely has moawr money. So much moawr I can't even bring myself to spell that word the right way. I have to say it in lolcatz just to manage my blood pressure. Romney's super PAC Restore Our Future paid their top fundraiser $1.9 million as a little thank-you for raising $24 million. That's one guy. According to OpenSecrets.org, they've raised $36,795,360 total. And thanks to this handy little website, we see a whole lotta funding coming from corporations -- via individuals, of course.
Too bad John Paulson of Paulson & Co. can't get up on stage and be all funny and shit before handing over his $1 million check to Restore Our Future.
So far it looks like the Gingrich-supporting super PAC Winning Our Future has raised $12 million. (Why would you let Charlie Sheen name your super PAC?) The Santorum super PAC Red, White & Blue Fund has raised $4 million. And Priority USA is also now up to $4.4 million.
Let's set aside whether or not people think Bill Maher is funny. Oy, the message boards are full of "hoo karz he sux!!!" from the likes of @Pistonsfkyeah457. Bill's entertainment value is beside the point. Whether the money comes from corporations or Hollywood stars, we're talking some ridic numbers here in the presidential campaigns. Bill would have to round up and cajole another 30 or so of his pals just to keep up with Romney's super PAC.
So when people complain about the close relationship between Hollywood and Obama like it's some sort of love affair between Hitler and Osama Bin Laden, I just have to roll my eyes. PUH-LEEZ. Check out the entertainment industry's $5 million in donation vs. bankers' $23 million (going mostly to conservatives) and let's talk about who's in bed with whom.
