Remember that silly "Last F---able Day" sketch Amy Schumer did a few weeks ago, about when actresses age out of desirable roles? Well, here's how real that actually is. 37-year-old Maggie Gyllenhaal was told she's "too old" to play opposite a 55-year-old man.
Oh Maggie, you've officially had your last f---ckable day, too soon! How could this be?
"It was astonishing to me," she told The Wrap. "It made me feel bad, and then it made me feel angry, and then it made me laugh.” Well at least she ended on "laugh." I think I might have stopped at angry. She declined to reveal which Hollywood genius made the call.
But hey, maybe Gyllenhaal is laughing because she's getting juicy roles anyway. (OMG, at the ripe old age of 37 even!) She just won a Golden Globe for her role in The Honorable Woman.
"A lot of actresses are doing incredible work right now, playing real women, complicated women," Gyllenhaal added. "I don’t feel despairing at all. And I’m more looking with hope for something fascinating."
As for the idea of watching a movie about a young woman playing opposite a 55-year-old, ugh. Is anyone else sick of that? Grossed out every time a new Woody Allen "spring chicken falls for geezer rooster" trailer rolls out? (He's not the only one, he's just the most pathetically obvious.)
Also, remember when then-28-year-old Gyllenhaal was cast opposite 56-year-old Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart? I thought, huh, I love Bridges but eww.
Can we please have less of that, Hollywood? Can we?

But I'm focusing on the negative. I'm glad actresses like Gyllenhaal are persistent and resilient enough to keep making movies, and I'm glad more women are writing, directing, and producing movies. Let's go with Maggie's hope.
