It's that moment brides wait for: The groom lifts her veil, they gaze into each other's eyes, and they seal their marriage with a kiss. Well, in this case, that scenario went horribly wrong. A Saudi couple who had not seen each other's faces before were joined in a traditional wedding outside Medina. But when thegroom saw his bride's face, he divorced her on the spot -- and in the rudest way, too!
Shortly after the wedding ceremony, the couple sat down for photos. When the bride lifted her veil to smile, her groom sprang up and cried, "You are not the girl I want to marry. You are not the one I had imagined. I am sorry, but I divorce you."
I'm sorry?!?
I'm sorry, but "I'm sorry" is a little bit inadequate in this situation. What a despicable way to behave! I can't imagine how humiliating this must have been for the bride. I cringe for her! And for her family -- and for his family. To have such a son -- what a disappointment.

We don't know all the details about this marriage. However, you could imagine that perhaps the groom was set up by an unscrupulous matchmaker who oversold the bride's beauty. But if you're the kind of man who values tradition and honoring one's family enough to go through with an arranged marriage, it would behoove you to do your duty and comport yourself with dignity even in the face of disappointment.
And anyway, in an arranged marriage, what matters most are the intangibles -- compatibility, shared goals and backgrounds. You kind of have to let go of the fantasy of marrying a hot babe.
But I'm not too sad for the bride because at least she's been set free from this jerk. Hopefully, her family will be able to find her a different groom, someone with more reasonable expectations. And she's been spared a lifetime yoked to a cruel man who resents her for her looks. No woman should have to suffer that.
