Even if you don't consider yourself a helicopter parent, this news story may make you want to keep a closer eye on your toddler at the park. Police say a 2-year-old was hurt by razor blades glued to playground equipment. I can't even believe I just wrote that sentence. Someone out there is that sick -- sick enough to try and hurt tiny, defenseless children at the playground. But there it is. Here's what we know so far about this incident.
Authorities in East Moline, Illinois say 12 razor blades were found glued to playground equipment in a city park. A 2-year-old suffered a lacerated finger from them, but thankfully it's a minor cut and the child is fine. Police investigated the rest of the playgrounds in the area, and so far it appears this was an isolated incident.
We have to keep a close eye on toddlers at playgrounds anyway, since they're likely to pick up just about anything and put it in their mouths: Cigarette butts, bits of broken glass, bottle caps, and the list goes on and on. But that's just the junk on the ground.
Horrible razor blades glued to playground equipment aside, this reminds us to be aware of our toddlers' surroundings everywhere, not just on the ground. Hopefully there won't be any copy-cat crimes. Regardless, it's smart to keep an eye out for the little things that can hurt our little ones.
