Does this feel familiar? You wake up Saturday morning after a busy week wondering, "What just happened?!?" I don't mean what just happened as in what did I do all week? You know that all too well. I mean, what happened in the rest of the world while I was working, changing diapers, packing lunches, stuck in traffic, and running a household?
We've got you covered! Here's a roundup of the week's top news stories in delicious, bite-sized pieces any busy person can digest. Now you'll sound all caught-up and informed this weekend at the soccer game or that dinner party you still need to find a dress for.
1. The trial for Osama bin Laden's son-in-law, Sulaiman Abu Ghaith, began this week in a civilian court in New York City. Abu Ghaith is accused of recruiting and inciting potential terrorists following the attacks of 9/11. He's pleaded not guilty, and his lawyer claims he's "no bin Laden" -- meaning he's small potatoes compared with his infamous father-in-law. But the prosecution says Abu Ghaith has acted as bin Laden's mouthpiece. He faces life in prison.
2. ZOMG, the Oscars were Sunday!We loved the dresses. 12 Years a Slave won Best Picture. Ellen DeGeneres killed, mostly.
3. The trial for Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius for the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, began in South Africa. The court heard from Pistorius' neighbors, who say they heard screams and shots, and who arrived on the scene soon after. Pistorius claims he shot his girlfriend through the bathroom door accidentally, thinking she was an intruder.
4. We loved this video of dads "breastfeeding" in support of women who do.
5. A bill that would reform the way the military handles accusations of sexual assault was defeated by the Senate. It would have allowed victims to avoid going through the whole chain of command when they report a crime. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand spent a year on this bill, but it fell short of the five votes it would need to avoid a filibuster. Gillibrand says she was disappointed, but she will continue pushing reforms in how sexual assault is handled in the military.
6. President Obama sent his budget to Congress on Tuesday. It is SO dead on arrival. But thassokay! It's actually an elections platform blueprint for Democrats to run on merely disguised as a budget.
7. The Ukraine ousted its leaders only to have Russia move in with troops in Crimea. Now Crimea wants to break away from Ukraine and join Russia. Find out why this is alarming leaders around the world, including President Obama.
8. It's legal to take "upskirt" photos in Massachusetts ... for now. A court ruled in favor of a man accused of photographing women from under their skirts because, hey, at least they were wearing underwear so it's not that bad. (EYEROLL) Embarrassed lawmakers in Massachusetts quickly passed a bill banning upskirt photography and it awaits Governor Deval Patrick's signature. UPDATE:Governeor Patrick signed the "upskirt" bill into law Friday afternoon.
9. The story about the pregnant mom who drove her minivan into the ocean with three kids inside shocked us all. Now it appears she may have been suffering from mental illness.
10. OMG, this little girl and her kitty cat singing "We Built This City" on a bike is everything.
