There's another, more serious Oscar in the news today. The trial for South African Olympic runner and double-amputee Oscar Pistorius for the death of his girlfriend, ReevaSteenkamp, is making headlines. A year ago early Valentine's Day morning, Reeva was shot three times through a locked bathroom door. The athlete admitted to shooting her, but said he mistook her for an intruder. In court earlier today Pistorius pleaded not guilty. But testimony from a key witness notes a detail that is already casting doubt on Pistorius' story.
Michelle Burger, a neighbor, says she was woken in the middle of the night from "blood-curdling screams" coming from the home Pistorius and Steenkamp share. She heard those screams -- and a man's voice yelling -- before she heard the shots fired.
"I was still sitting in the bed and I heard her screams. She screamed terribly and she yelled for help. Then I also heard a man screaming for help. Three times he yelled for help," Berger says. Her husband called the security firm that protects their gated community. The screaming continued.
I heard the screams again. It was worse. It was more intense. She was very scared. Just after her screams, I heard four shots. Four gun-shots. Bang ... bang, bang, bang. It was very traumatic for me. You could hear that it was bloodcurdling screams.
Only after the shots stopped did the screaming subside.
I still don't know what to think about this story. On one hand, I can see how a man with no feet or legs would feel panicky if he felt there was an intruder in his home. And by some accounts, he was madly in love with Steenkamp.
On the other hand, he's also pleading not-guilty to other firearms charges, including discharging a gun in a restaurant and from inside a car. What's going on with Pistorius and guns? And if neighbors heard Steenkamp screaming before the gun shots, what could she have been screaming about?
I guess we'll have to stay tuned. Pistorius' trial is being broadcast live, online. Hopefully within the next few weeks, we'll have a better idea of whether Pistorius is a heartbroken man who lost his girlfriend through a tragic mistake or a man with issues capable of killing the person closest to him.
