Clik here to view.Gay rights took one step back and then one step forward this week in Arizona, landing everyone pretty much in the same place. First Arizona legislators voted to give businesses the right to deny gay people service on religious grounds. I don't know why they thought it was worth anyone's time to go through all that trouble. But anyhoo! Thousands of outraged tweets, posts, interviews and facepalms later, Governor Jan Brewer vetoed SB1062, A.K.A. The Embarrassing Money-Losing Anti-Gay Bill. Most of America breathed a sigh of relief.
As usual, people had a lot to say about this bill via Twitter. Here's some of the highlights...
Shortly after the Arizona state legislature passed the anti-gay bill, its one gay rep tweeted his dismay.
As the only LGBT member of the Arizona House of Representatives I am deeply saddened and appalled #HB2153 was defended and #SB1062 passed.
— Demion Clinco (@DemionClinco) February 21, 2014George Takei was a little more explicit in his response.
What I bet many of the good people of Arizona are feeling. pic.twitter.com/nAaItjGEcM
— George Takei (@GeorgeTakei) February 24, 2014Oh AZ legislators, you really blew it this time.
AZ, it works both ways. #tcot#ArizonaBillpic.twitter.com/DaftrmCgRx
— Dave Ryan (@maddogg2463) February 25, 2014Finally, Jan Brewer vetoed the bill.
Moments ago, I vetoed #SB1062. pic.twitter.com/gdQn0dG2vB
— Jan Brewer (@GovBrewer) February 27, 2014Some folks were a little bit cynical about Brewer's motivation.
Republicans love money even more than they hate the gays. #SB1062#arizonabill
— BWD (@theonlyadult) February 27, 2014Others reminded us of an important history lesson.
@rcb1963 Nope. 1964 Civil Rights Act says that you do NOT get to decide who sits at the lunch counter. Battle won 50 years ago.#arizonabill
— Evan S. Cohen (@evan_manifesto) February 27, 2014But was it really just about the money? Does it matter?

— Lars Pellinat (@Lars9596) February 27, 2014And why did it take Brewer 5 days to decide what to do?
Says a lot that Jan Brewer's biggest accomplishment as Arizona Gov is taking 5 days to veto #SB1062 instead of 5 min.
— Eric Shapiro (@EricShapiro3) February 27, 2014That aside, things are pretty much the same in Arizona as they were before.
Now Arizona is just a place where you can fire someone for being LGBT, BUT AT LEAST NO SEPARATE WATER FOUNTAINS! #SB1062
