For two years she made a dream trip around the world with her husband. Shortly after her return, almost a month ago, she went missing. Now, her family has learned the worst. The body of 33-year-old Leanne Bearden has been foundin the woods outside her home in Garden Ridge, Texas. She was last seen leaving for a walk in those woods from her in-laws' house. Her family left a heartbreaking message on the Facebook page dedicated to finding Leanne.
Our family is understandably devastated by the news of the recovery of the remains of our beloved Leanne. We wish to thank the myriad of people who helped us search for Leanne and who supported us during this entire nightmare. We also wish to thank the members of the media who helped us tell our story. We thank the Garden Ridge Police Department and the other many agencies that provided such caring service to us. We especially thank the Heidi Search Center for their wonderful help and support. Although this is not the outcome we had hoped for, we draw comfort and strength from the outpouring of prayers, actions, and good wishes from all, including over 20,000 Facebook friends. We ask your continued prayers and good wishes for our family. Leanne was a lovely and remarkable young woman, and we will all miss her greatly.
Before her disappearance, Leanne and her husband, Josh Bearden, had climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and biked through Bolivia, among many other amazing adventures Leanne documented in her blog. (You could easily lose an entire afternoon exploring with the couple.) Her family says that after 22 months traveling, Leanne was having trouble adjusting to everyday life. "The pressure of transitioning from her two-year trip back into what we consider 'normal' life seems to have left her very anxious and stressed."
Police don't yet know how Leanne died. During the search police said, "There is no indication at this time that (her disappearance) is criminal in nature." Her family said, "There is evidence that Leanne may have voluntarily left the area." But an autopsy is being done now, and her family will be the first to learn what that reveals.
At least her family has closure now, but what heartbreaking news. After a whirlwind adventure around the world with her sweetheart, one young woman's life abruptly ended. Her husband, left behind, will always have memories and photos from their once-in-a-lifetime journey.
