America, are you ready for this? Check it out. Desiree Harstock just posted a photo of her fiance, and Chris Siegfried is sporting a beard. Not just a three-day been-busy starter, but a full-on beard. This man is all about commitment. He's committed to Desi, and he's committed to the manly art of beardness. Now, I ask you. WHY DON'T YOU LIKE IT?
I don't have any firm numbers at my disposal, but I would guess about 80 percent of Bachelorette viewers are anti-beard, especially on Chris. And I just don't get it. I think it suits him. It makes him look more mature, more sexy -- it's a look that says Testosterone! And it's neatly trimmed. What's the problem?
Sure, if he lived in Brooklyn or Portland, we would have to disqualify him outright for living a cliche through his facial hair. (Seriously, every single man in Brooklyn has a beard, and it's gotten boring. Somebody in my borough needs to dare to be different and SHAVE.) But elsewhere it still gives you a little hipster cred. Ew, did I just say hipster cred -- about a guy who competed in The Bachelorette and writes bad poetry?!?
I'm lost. I don't even know what I'm doing in this post anymore.
This is actually the second time I've found myself defending Chris' choice to sprout a mangarden on his face, and it's starting to get a little weird. Is this my life now? Am I really taking a stand on Chris Siegfried's face? Wait, that ... sounded ... so wrong ... I think I need to take a break here, eat something chocolate, and give this some serious contemplation.
Okay, I'm back. I've got it now. Here, HERE is the reason why I am defending Chris' beard. Because! It makes him less cookie-cutter guy. We seem to have this generic ideal for The Handsome Man on television, and it's like we're still in the age of Mad Men. It's still clean-shaven. Now I like that look on a lot of men, but can we please have some variety? First Ben Affleck broke our hearts and shaved off his Argo beard (still not over it). Then Joe Manganiello shaved off his beard and now we're just confused. Chris is just balancing things out. I think that's why I'm defending him. After Ben and Joe, I sense an imbalance in the universe. Chris is just setting things right. Thank you, Chris Siegfried. Thank you.
