There's a new baby at the White House! Sasha and Malia Obama just got their very own puppy: Introducing Sunny, a 1-year-old female Portugese Water Dog (just like Bo). We hear she's "full of energy and very affectionate." Bo was actually a gift from Senator Ted Kennedy, who thoughtfully found a breed that wouldn't trigger Malia's allergies. He joined the family in 2009. But Sunny is the answer to a promise the President made to his daughter five years ago.
In his 2004 acceptance speech, Obama said, "Sasha and Malia, I love you both so much, and you have earned the new puppy that's coming with us to the White House." The sisters were the ones to name the dog who joined the family a year later. But they wanted more ... In the President's 2012 victory speech, he told them, "Sasha and Malia, before our very eyes you're growing up to be two strong, smart, beautiful young women, just like your mom. And I'm so proud of you guys. But I will say, for now, one dog's probably enough." Aw, Dad!

Welp, looks like the girls got their dad to change his mind after all. (Maybe certain Republicans should meet with Sasha and Malia to pick up some negotiating tips -- mwa ha ha!) But it sounds like Michelle may have had a hand in convincing him. In October she said she had to arrange a doggy play date for Bo because "Bo doesn't have enough dog interaction." So you see? This second dog isn't just for the girls, it's for Bo, too! Great tactic, mom. I see Barack is outnumbered in this household.
Yesterday the First Lady tweeted a photo of the family's newest member: "So excited to introduce the newest member of the Obama family—our puppy, Sunny!"

And the President sent out a welcome tweet to Sunny as well: "Welcome to the family, Sunny." The Obamas are making a contribution to the Washington, D.C. Humane Society in Sunny's honor. Here's Sunny on the move. Daww!
