Oh yes, also the oldest two siblings fall in love and carry out an incestuous affair. Incest has never been so ... uhh, I don't even want to say. We all passed this novel around in high school, enthralled by the horror of it all. It was adapted into a film in 1987 sans the incest theme, which pretty much ruined it. But Hollywood is taking a crack at anew Flowers in the Attic movie to air on Lifetime. Here's what we know about it so far.
Heather Graham will star as the mother, Corrine, and Ellen Burstyn will play the cruel grandmother, Olivia. Kiernan Shipka (Sally Draper from Mad Men) will play Cathy and Mason Dye (Secret Diary of an American Cheerleader) will play her older brother/lover Chris.
Yeah ... how do we feel about that? Usually it's young adults playing teenagers in sexual situations. It's going to be super creepy to see Cathy played by a real teenager, and a young teen, too. Kiernan is definitely up to the task -- it's just that she's so young. Remember when Jenna Malone played the lead in Bastard Out of Carolina? Having such a young actor in a role like that ups the drama, I think.
The screenplay is being written by Kayla Alpert of Up All Night. And it will be directed by Deborah Chow, who wrote and directed The High Cost of Living. So Kaylay and Deb? I think I speak for all fans of the book when I say that I think you need to include the incest story line this time. I mean, it's creepy and gross, but it's central to the whole story!
I'm sure if they do delve into Cathy and Chris's love affair, they'll be tasteful about it, since they're working with actual kids instead of 30-year-olds playing teenagers. No word yet on when the movie will air, just some time in 2014.
Do you remember reading Flowers in the Attic? Do you think they should leave the incest in this time?
