For the first 14 months of her life Reyn Schadt couldn't hear. She was born deaf, due to a congenital virus called Cytomegalovirus. But Reyn's world changed radically when she was fitted with a cochlear implant. Her parents had always assumed they would all learn sign language to communicate -- but maybe they won't now. It appears the procedure worked. And we get to witness the moment Reyn hears for the very first time. As you can see, it's overwhelming for the toddler.

With a flip of a switch, suddenly she has a brand-new, fifth sense! Can you imagine how that would feel? A new sensation you didn't even know existed until now. No wonder she starts crying immediately. I think it would be scary, and it will take her a while to adjust. But it's worth it.
