Oh for the love of God, not again! Anthony Weiner ... sigh. Man. You know what I'm going to say. You know what's coming. We were hoping to never hear this news, and yet, deep inside we all kind of knew it was going to happen. Again. Okay, here goes. A woman claims famously married NYC mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner was sexting her as recently as last summer.
You guys, he relapsed. He went in for seconds. How much do you want to know? It's like we're at the dentist's office waiting to hear how effed our teeth are. Is it just a few cavities or a root canal? Folks, I think we're looking at a root canal. Gather 'round the campfire for a rousing tale of What Weiner Did!
The gossip website TheDirty.com says it has sexually explicit conversations between Weiner and a 20-something woman. The conversations happened after (fucking AFTER!!!) Weiner resigned from Congress in the midst of scandal, flames and smoke emanating from his once-promising political career. Some of the conversations happened as recently as LAST FREAKIN' SUMMER FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. I don't know if this is the most cringe-worthy detail, but I feel I should tell you: Sometimes Weiner referred to himself as Carlos Danger.
The Dirty has screenshots of sexually explicit convos from Formspring and Facebook. Also from Facebook: photos. Alas. The woman claims the relationship lasted about six months.
Now. This is something people do, and it's fun (ahem, so I hear), and it's not a big deal -- if you're single. If you're a married public figure running for mayor of the Big Apple, it's a colossally bad idea. If you're a married public figure running for mayor of the Big Apple and you've already been caught and lost your job and almost lost your family over this, then you have a PROBLEM. That's not just poor judgment, that's addiction.
But are the allegations true this time, or was this all cooked up by main rival Christine Quinn? Well, apparently some of this is true. Enough is true. Anthony Weiner issued (oh God, why did I use that word?!?) a statement this afternoon:
I said that other texts and photos were likely to come out, and today they have. As I have said in the past, these things that I did were wrong and hurtful to my wife and caused us to go through challenges in our marriage that extended past my resignation from Congress. While some things that have been posted today are true and some are not, there is no question that what I did was wrong. This behavior is behind me. I've apologized to Huma and am grateful that she has worked through these issues with me and for her forgiveness. I want to again say that I am very sorry to anyone who was on the receiving end of these messages and the disruption that this has caused. As my wife and I have said, we are focused on moving forward.
Oh yeah, Weiner's wife. So I guess he's saying she already knows, and they've worked it out between the two of them? How does that work, exactly? Because when a husband betrays you a second or third time, there's this white-hot anger that burns everything to stubble and you're left surveying your life and asking your friends to recommend a good divorce lawyer, because obviously this person is just going to DO THIS TO YOU AGAIN and again. So I hear.
I guess we'll have to see who is more forgiving, New Yorkers or Weiner's wife. But I tell you, Weiner is not going to change, not without some significant help. And even then ...
UPDATE: Weiner just announced that he will not drop out of the mayoral race in light of these revelations.
